smc foundation diploma – Physical Activity and step up
Entry Recommendations: Open entry.
Course Outline: This is a compulsory course for all Year 11 students. The programme is made up of TWO periods per week of Physical Activity (PA) and TWO periods per week of Step Up.
Th Physical Activity Course is of a practical nature, in which students learn in, through and about movement and physical activity. The emphasis is on participation and enjoyment in experiencing physical activity and the gaining of valuable interpersonal skills.

- Adventure Based Learning
- Minor Games
- Sports Education
- Self Defence and Fill Your Bucket
Step Up (Classes will complete a range of units from these options):
- Careers Education
- Keeping ourselves safe at parties – Drugs and alcohol
- Sexuality Education
- Study Skills
- Positive Psychology
- Be the Change Service Project
- Resilience – Dealing with stress, loss, change. grief etc.
- Basic money and finances
Course Costs: Approximately $50 for Self Defence and $90 for the Be The Change Service Programme
There is no assessment for these courses, however completion of both Physical Activity and the Step Up Programme, including the Be the Change Service project are all requirements of gaining the SMC Foundation Diploma.
The course leads to: NCEA Level 2 Health Studies. NCEA Level 2 Physical Education.
