smc foundation diploma – French
Entry Recommendations: Completion of Year 10 French or in consultation with the Head of Faculty.
Course outline:
This course is designed for pre-intermediate language learners of French and prepares students for IB or NCEA Level 2. The Year 11 programme emphasises communication through the development of listening, reading, writing, and speaking skills. Students learn to communicate about familiar situations and topics, such as the people and events in their lives, home and school routines, holidays, wellbeing and health, entertainment and social arrangements. Students acquire language to communicate about present, past, and future events, beyond the immediate context. They learn how to express their opinion, and justify a viewpoint. This aligns with Level A2 of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) for languages.
Communication, language, and culture are integrated into all topics and students are encouraged to develop their intercultural competence and awareness of Mātauranga Māori and the target cultures. Making connections with other learning areas, especially English, Geography, and History, is also an important, inherent aspect of language learning.
Assessments:
All four skills (listening, reading, speaking, writing) will be assessed in this course. The assessments will be weighted evenly.
The productive skills (speaking and writing) are assessed in Terms 1-3 in class time.
The receptive skills (listening and reading) are assessed (in an end-of year examination) in Term 4.
