NCEA Level 2 Te reo Maori
Level 2
Number of Credits: up to 18

Entry Recommendations: Proficient completion of the Foundation Diploma Te Reo Māori or in consultation with the Head of Faculty.

Skills developed in the course:

The Year 12 programme emphasises communication in a cultural framework of Te Ao Māori, through the development of listening, reading, writing, and speaking skills. Students learn to communicate about familiar situations and topics, such as the people and events in their lives, home and school routines, holidays, sport, and wellbeing , whānau and marae. They acquire language to communicate about present, past and future events, learning how to express an opinion, and justify a viewpoint. They will be introduced to the special qualities of Māori pūrākau, oratory, waiata, tikanga, and traditional crafts.

Principles of Mātauranga Maori will underpin the cultural content, and the acquisition of Te Reo Māori will be celebrated as a taonga for all New Zealanders, a taonga carried by students of Te Reo Māori who are contributing to the process of Aotearoa, honouring its bi-cultural heritage in an increasingly multi-cultural context. Connections with other learning areas will be explored where collaboration will deepen the learning.
